Visit to Brazil
Early in October 2009 I had the privilege to travel to Brazil. Most of my time was spent in Ouro Preto a beautiful, historic country town. I stayed in a bed and breakfast with wonderful accommodations and wonderful breakfasts. One thing that really got my attention was that everywhere I went, in homes or restaurants, soapstone cookware was being used. This restaurant was typical. Soapstone blocks on each side with a fire in the center, over the fire is a steel plate with burner plate inserts (readily available in Brazil). Cooking was done in the center and when the items were cooked they moved the soapstone pots to the side, over the soapstone blocks. Since these soapstone blocks were heated up from the fire, that heat combined with the heat already built up in the cookware kept food the perfect temperature.
Soapstone cookware has been used for centuries, as a matter of fact the family of these two gentlemen have been harvesting soapstone from this deposit for 300 years. Once these blocks are roughly shaped they are turned on a lathe and the copper bands and handles are carefully crafted and attached.
